Book launch of the most awaited book ‘Lectures On The Art Of Surgery’
November 26, 2022

The launch of a much-awaited book ‘Lectures on The Art Of Surgery’ compiled and written by a host of accomplished clinicians including well-known surgeons, Dr. Harsha Jauhari, Chief Editor and Dr. Ashish Dey, co-Editor of the book. The book was launched in the eminent presence of Dr. D S Rana, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr. Samiran Nundy, Emeritus Consultant, Department of G I Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Dr. Rashmi Saluja, Executive Chairman, Religare Enterprises Ltd. at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital auditorium. This book about surgical techniques, the surgical planning process and many other aspects of conducting him/herself during surgery.

‘Lectures On The Art Of Surgery’ is a seminal compilation of experiences and expert know-how that will help people from the medical fraternity understand the evolution and nuances of surgical practices and techniques, worldwide. The book’s Chief Editor stated, “The book is a gist of my experiences as a medical practitioner and surgeon. It is a leap of faith both for us as well as industry and one, which I’m confident, will lead to further collaborations between professionals from medicine and medical insurance. I hope medical enthusiasts, students of medicine and observers of the medical profession like it and use it as reference material, wherever suitable.”

The book is divided into 4 sections. The main section is focused on ‘Concepts and Attitudes’, touching on vital but largely minimized, subjects. The tone is deliberately informal. These Concepts and Attitudes are part of every surgeon’s persona, but have rarely been discussed on an academic platform. Twenty-three competent surgeons presented these in an effective and lucid manner.

Some presentations covered topics such as ‘Surgical Deportment and Opinions’, ‘Conceptualization and Visualization of, an operation’ or ‘Knowing your instruments and planning your operation’. These discussed ways of how a surgeon should conduct himself or how his thought process should work in planning and conducting an operation or how to control ‘Panic’ when things are not going your way.

Gentle tissue handling, care and sensitivity in handling women or children as patients, or the use of support systems are also addressed. Training sessions on the best use of Surgical Tools or the optimum techniques of various Ward Procedure Skills, demonstrated by seasoned clinicians, are discussed in other sections. A Section on ‘Poly Trauma – Where the young surgeon is the 1st responder’, is included. “What do I do now?” – The young surgeon, in a particular speciality, can perform most emergency procedure but is unsure. What is good for the experts in their specialties is good for him. A pregnant woman, in an accident, do I turn her to left side or right or on back? a fractured and bent limb – do I straighten it? Glass fragments in both eyes, a baby in trauma, etc. what do I do? Hopefully, we provide some answers here in this section.

This is not a textbook in the classical sense of the ward, but it provides an insight and guidance to some simple and basic questions a young surgeon will face. The ASICON-CME Foundation has been very supportive towards providing a new direction of upskilling its younger members, while creating archival material. This humble offering is presented to the public and medical profession in the hope that it will generate interest in the facets of surgery that are taken for granted - the ‘Art’.

Readers can soon purchase the book from newsstands, bookstores and online booksellers. Limited copies of the book will be available at select libraries of educational institutions and hospitals for students and medical professionals, etc.
